Full Sheet Gray Matala.

Dimensions are 48″ x 39″ x 1.5″ thick.

The gray density Matala pad is the fine density of all 4 densities.

It is best used as a biological filter pad but can also be used as a mechanical filter pad for filtering fine particles.

The Gray Matala pad has a high available surface area for biofilm (ASA) with exceptional interstitial spaces and maintains free flow of water throughout when pre-filtered properly. For these reasons the Gray Matala is considered one of the best biofilter media on the market.

It can also perform as a mechanical filter removing solid waste such as: small pieces of floating algae, small aquatic plant particulates, pollen, small size fish waste and bacterial floc.

The Gray Matala can be used before or after the filter pump. If it is used as a biological filter, it is wise to place a few sheets of Green and Blue Matala pad in front to prevent clogging the biofilms with solids. It also works when placed after the filter pump as a mechanical filter to capture fine size particulates.

The Gray Matala cleans easily with pressure from a garden hose or a quick shake up and down in a tub of pond water. You can also tap the filter pad on some rocks in the garden to dislodge particles without the use of a pressure hose. However, if you are using as a bio-filter then do not use tap water with chlorine/chloramine in it. The chlorine/chloramine will damage the bacteria within the biofilm. It is better to dislodge sediment and detritus from the Gray Matala pad by washing with clean pond water from a bucket or in a tub. You can also use a submersible style pump connected to a hose to pressure wash the Gray Matala with pond water, thereby minimizing damage to the biofilm.

If your biofilter has a proper bottom drain for cleaning, then hosing down the pads with pond water can be done right inside the filter box without removing from the box. Please read our articles on proper pond filtration designs and considerations.

The semi-rigid nature allows the Gray Matala to be self-supportive for a number of years.

Place the Gray Matala after the Green and Blue Matala pads to keep the Gray pads cleaner longer. This enhances the “Progressive Filtration” effect.

It can be placed in an upflow filter, downflow filter or “cross-flow” filter.

All Matala media cuts easily with a sharp knife or fine-tooth saw if needed.

Make your cuts fit tight within the space of your filter box in order to prevent

channeling of water and solid waste around the pads.

Full Sheet Gray Matala pads are best shipped via truck on a pallet.

However, we can fold the Gray Full Sheet in half to ship it on UPS or FedEx.

There will be a crease down the middle of the full sheet which will not affect the performance of the pad. If you lay it out in the sun it will return to original shape. We can ship up to 4 Full Sheets in one carton, folded in half on UPS or FedEx.

We ship up to 50 Full Sheets on one pallet via truck.

OK to mix your color densities for shipping.
