The Black Matala filter pads is suitable as a pre-filter or mechanical filter pad.

It can be used as your first filter pad in front of the other 3 Matala filter pads or other types of filter media, in order to achieve progressive filtration.

It can be placed at the bottom of an upflow filter to act as a support grid and to capture large solids. It can also be used inside a settling tank or Vortex filter to improve the efficiency of the settling tank or Vortex filter.

The Black Matala is the least dense of all 4 Matala densities. Small particles can flow through it. It is designed to capture leaves, seed pods, litter and large clumps of string algae.

It is best used ahead of the filter pump. Once your dirty water passes through a filter pump, the particle size will be too small for a single Black Matala to capture. However, it can be used after the pump in a large filter tank as the only media in the filter tank. You must use multiple layers of black media to capture smaller particles. With enough black pads stacked together you can create an exceptional mechanical/biological filter with very low maintenance.

It can be placed in an upflow filter, downflow filter or “cross-flow” filter.

Matala media cuts easily with a sharp knife or fine-tooth saw if needed.

The Black density is very sturdy and is better cut with an electric jig saw or skill saw. If you use a skill saw, you need to turn the blade around backwards for a clean and smooth cut.

Make your cuts fit tight within the space of your filter box in order to prevent channeling of water and solid waste around the pads.

The Black Matala media is used extensively in waste treatment systems due to the high available interstitial spaces. It can handle high BOD levels when used in wastewater treatment. It is also used in aquaculture for shrimp farm habitat and in open seawater mussel farms.
