Canyon Matrix™ – Pond-less Waterfall Reservoir
Build a beautiful pond-less waterfall without a traditional open pond. Our Canyon Matrix™ combines an underground water-storage reservoir with an integrated pump-access chamber, giving smaller cascading waterfalls and backyard streams a compact recirculating foundation.
Its one-piece molded construction maintains open water-storage space while protecting the submersible pump. A removable access lid simplifies pump inspection and maintenance after installation.
The Canyon Matrix combines water storage and a protected pump chamber in one molded unit. Its removable lid provides access to the pump without dismantling the surrounding waterfall.
The 21-gallon reservoir maintains open storage space beneath the decorative rockwork. Slotted sidewalls allow returning water to enter the chamber for recirculation.
The Canyon Matrix is designed for smaller pond-less waterfall installations where the pump and water reservoir can be contained within one compact underground component.
It is rated for pump flow up to 2,500 gallons per hour. Choose your pump based on the waterfall's required flow at its operating height, plumbing resistance, and the reservoir's available water capacity.
This is the Canyon Matrix reservoir, not a complete waterfall kit. A working pond-less waterfall also requires a compatible pump, waterfall spillway, liner, protective underlayment, plumbing, and installation materials.
If you prefer a coordinated system that already includes the primary waterfall components, consider our DIY Mini 10" Cascading Falls Kit or DIY Small 20" Cascading Falls Kit .

The 21-gallon specification describes the reservoir's stated storage capacity. Actual operating water availability depends on water level and the complete waterfall installation.
The Canyon Matrix is installed inside a lined underground basin at the lower end of a pond-less waterfall or stream. Proper excavation, liner placement, and water-entry clearance are important for reliable operation.
Position the Canyon Matrix where the waterfall or stream will return water to the underground basin. Keep the pump-access lid accessible for future maintenance. Contact your local utility-locating service before digging.
Our installation guide recommends an excavation approximately 28" long × 22" wide × 13" deep. This allows approximately 3" of additional space on each long, slotted side for water movement and gravel placement.
Remove sharp rocks and roots from the excavation. Install protective underlayment followed by rubber liner. Leave sufficient liner extending beyond the basin and up the planned streambed before trimming.
Place the reservoir inside the lined basin. Center it so both long, slotted sides retain approximately 3" of open space. Fill those spaces with rinsed river rock large enough to remain outside the slots.
Install a properly sized submersible pump in the accessible chamber and route its plumbing through the hose opening. Connect the pump to your waterfall spillway, complete the rockwork, fill the reservoir, and test the system. Follow the official installation guide for full details.
The Canyon Matrix includes a molded connection for adding an automatic water-fill system. This allows a compatible fill valve to replace water lost through evaporation and splashing.
Monitor water levels: Check the reservoir regularly and refill as needed. Operating the pump without adequate water can cause damage.
Keep water moving freely: Remove leaves and debris that could restrict water flow through the surrounding gravel or pump intake.
Inspect your pump: Use the removable access lid to check the pump and clean the intake according to the pump manufacturer's instructions.
Prepare for freezing weather: If shutting down for winter, remove and store the pump according to the seasonal maintenance guide. Keep the underground basin at least half full to reduce the risk of freeze-thaw heaving.

No. The Canyon Matrix includes the molded reservoir and removable pump-access lid. The pump, plumbing, liner, waterfall spillway, and other installation materials are purchased separately.
The Canyon Matrix is rated for pump flow up to 2,500 GPH. The appropriate pump must also fit inside the access chamber and deliver the required waterfall flow at your installation's operating head. Contact our Sales/Tech Team if you need help selecting a compatible pump.
Our installation guide recommends an excavation approximately 28" long × 22" wide × 13" deep. The additional width accommodates the gravel-filled water-entry spaces beside the long slotted walls. Allow additional room for the stream and waterfall.
Yes. Our DIY Mini 10" and DIY Small 20" Cascading Falls Kits both use the Canyon Matrix as their underground reservoir. When purchasing components individually, make sure the pump, spillway, plumbing, and water-storage capacity are properly matched.
No. Water can still be lost through evaporation, splashing, and wind. The 21-gallon specification describes the reservoir's storage capacity, not a guaranteed usable operating reserve. Monitor the water level regularly or consider adding the optional automatic water-fill kit.
If you shut down your pond-less waterfall, follow the pump manufacturer's winter-storage instructions. Our seasonal maintenance guide recommends leaving the underground basin at least half full to reduce freeze-thaw heaving. Review the guide for full winterization procedures.
