Pond Waterfall Box 1500 – DIY – 14" Detachable Spillway

Biological pond filtration and a built-in waterfall return

Create the head of a pond waterfall while adding biological filtration to a new or existing water garden. The PB1281 combines a molded waterfall-filter chamber, removable 14-inch weir, filter mat and installation hardware in one compact unit sized for ponds up to 1,500 gallons.

The chamber provides space for mechanical and biological filtration while the wide front spillway returns circulated water to the pond as a waterfall.

The detachable weir, liner clips, silicone, screws and caps support a sealed connection between the pond liner and waterfall box.

The black molded box can be built into the waterfall head and disguised with site-supplied rockwork and landscaping while remaining accessible for service.

The PB1281 is the waterfall/filter box and its attachment hardware. A pump, skimmer, pond liner, underlayment, 1.5-inch flexible PVC pipe, PVC primer and cement, biological filter media, rockwork and other pond-building materials are not included. Match the box to your actual pond volume, fish load, plumbing run and required pump head—not only the pond’s surface dimensions.

Recommended media: The installation guide identifies one cubic foot of Bacti-Twist (item PBBT1) as the recommended biological media. On the linked Bacti-Twist page, select the 1 cu. ft. option.

Maximum ratings are selection limits, not a guarantee that every pond of that size will use the same pump. Account for vertical lift, plumbing length, fittings and the waterfall effect you want when choosing the rest of the circulation system.

The PB1281 is the mid-size DIY option: it keeps the 14-inch spillway of the smaller model but adds capacity and flow. Choose an Elite model when your pond, pump or waterfall design exceeds the DIY series limits.

Review the model-specific manual before digging or cutting liner. The waterfall box works as part of a recirculating pond system and must be supported, leveled, plumbed and sealed correctly.

Place the waterfall opposite the skimmer to encourage circulation. It can sit at the pond edge or at the top of a stream, with service access left around the filter chamber.

Compact the supporting soil to reduce future settling. Level the box side to side and tilt it slightly forward—about one-quarter bubble—so water moves toward the spillway.

Apply the included Teflon tape to the threaded connection and install the included PVC male adapter. Glue 1.5-inch flexible PVC pipe into the adapter with separately purchased PVC primer and cement.

Use the liner clips to hold the liner while applying silicone and fastening the detachable weir. Trim the spillway opening only after the liner and weir are securely positioned.

Place the white filter mat horizontally in the bottom. Fill the mesh bag with separately purchased biological media and set the bag above the mat.

Run the circulation system and inspect the plumbing, liner seal, water path and flow before surrounding the box with rockwork or landscaping.

Our pond-maintenance guide recommends cleaning Bacti-Twist media about once per year, when pond water is coldest or below 50°F. Whenever possible, rinse it with pond water; chlorinated tap water can kill the beneficial bacteria living on the media.

Keep the top of the chamber accessible after landscaping. Watch for reduced waterfall flow, inspect the filter system for accumulated debris and follow the care instructions for the separately selected pump and skimmer.

Use the exact Crystal Falls manual for the PB1281 installation. The planning and seasonal guides help with the larger pond system around it.

Our Sales/Tech Team can help you review pond volume, desired waterfall flow, plumbing size and the pump or skimmer needed around this waterfall box before you order.

No. It is a waterfall/filter box with a detachable weir, filter mat, media bag and installation hardware. The pump, skimmer, liner, underlayment, pipe, biological media and landscape materials are sold separately.

It is listed to filter ponds up to 1,500 gallons, with a listed pond footprint up to approximately 8 × 11 feet or similar. Actual equipment selection should also account for pond depth, fish load, plumbing resistance and waterfall height.

The current maximum listed flow is 2,500 GPH. Choose a pump based on its delivered flow after vertical lift and plumbing losses, not only its zero-head rating.

No. The mesh bag is included, but the biological media that fills it is not. The installation guide recommends one cubic foot of Bacti-Twist, item PBBT1.

The box is designed for 1.5-inch flexible PVC pipe. The threaded PVC male adapter and Teflon tape are included; the flexible pipe, PVC primer and cement are separate.

Position the waterfall opposite the skimmer to encourage water circulation across the pond. The box may be placed at the pond edge or at the top of a constructed stream.

Our maintenance guide recommends cleaning Bacti-Twist about once per year when the water is coldest or below 50°F. Rinse with pond water whenever possible so chlorine does not damage the beneficial bacteria.

The Blue Thumb engineered-plastic waterfall filter carries a lifetime limited warranty against manufacturing defects for the original purchaser, subject to proper installation and the terms in the current warranty document. Labor and freight are not included.
